Not Your Grandma's Library
By: Librarian Lin Edmonston
Rossman’s library is not your grandma’s library.
Pirates have invaded the Rossman Library! Aargh! Shiver Me Timbers! We are talking like pirates, reading pirate books, looking for gold and munching on goldfish. What an experience!
The first grade participated in the much anticipated “Talk Like a Pirate Day” on September 18 in the library, and JK and SK joined the fun later in the week. I think it is important to point out we are good, kind pirates and not the thieving, rogue pirates of old. The library is the perfect spot for any activity promoting books and reading and Pirate Day fit the bill. Libraries are competing with bookstores and coffee shops on this increasingly popular day. While I do not serve a brewed latte in the library, I think it is important to make reading and libraries fun!
Not only are fun things happening at the Rossman Library but also at the St. Louis County Library. The library is offering a Little Reader Festival for our younger set. It’s jammed-packed with extensive activities and fun for families with young children. Find more information here. For older students the St. Louis County Library offers wonderful, hand-on classes that coordinate with The Discovery of King Tut at the St. Louis Science Center. Classes like “Write Like an Egyptian,” “Mummy Cats” and “Egyptian Mummy Mysteries Revealed” are offered. Check them out here.
There are many ways to read with and to our children. Dr. John Hutton on the Read Aloud website is a huge advocate of reading to your children at an early age and continuing as they learn to read themselves. He is a pediatrician, researcher, author, children’s bookstore owner, and, not the least, a father of three. His message and that of the Read Aloud website is “Read Aloud 15 MINUTES. Every child. Every parent. Every day.”
Please come into the library soon (with or without your pirate hat) and check out a stack of books to enjoy with your child. Read, Read, Read. It’s the best thing we can do for our children and so much fun. Turn off your device, leave it in another room so you are not tempted to look at it and DIVE into a book. Aargh! Watch out for pirates!
